Internet Access

In this article, we described the features of managing and billing Internet access for your servers.

The “Internet” Section

In the “Internet” section of the main menu, you can:

  • Learn how Internet traffic is billed

  • View the statistics of network load and how it affects the cost of services

  • Change the Internet access speed limitation for your servers

A card is created in this section for each region where you have resources. “More” opens the region settings.

Dedicated Average Speed Threshold

The most important information here is the “Dedicated Average Speed Threshold” or “Dedicated Threshold”. It is the data transfer speed for which there is no extra charge.

By default, the “Dedicated Threshold” is equal to the free bandwidth we provide to all subscribers. This may vary from region to region, for example in Manila it is 50 Mbps and in Warsaw and Miami it is 1000 Mbps.

If during one particular hour, the average speed of your incoming or outgoing traffic in a region exceeds the “Dedicated Threshold”, we will charge you an additional fee for that hour. The rate at which this charge is calculated is shown on the page in the “Overage Charge” section. The final amount we have charged for exceeding the threshold can be seen in the “Billing” -> “Usage details” section.

Hint

Let’s assume that your “Dedicated Threshold” is 1000 Mbps and the average traffic speed for an hour exceeded this threshold: inbound speed = 1200 Mbps and outbound speed = 1300 Mbps. We will only charge for outgoing traffic since there was more of it. From 1300 Mbps subtract the value of “Dedicated Threshold” 1000 Mbps which will result in 300 Mbps. Now multiply the result by the “Overage charge” to get the final amount of the overage fee: 300 * 0,0003 $ = 0,09 $.

The value of the “Dedicated Threshold” does not have to equal the free bandwidth. You may contact us to increase it to, for example, 2000 Mbps. We will charge a flat monthly fee for this service, but it will allow you to better control your spending.

Traffic Consumption Statistics

In the chart, you can see not only consumption statistics but also in what hours and in what volume the consumption rate exceeded the allocated threshold. “Total Billable Speed Exceedances” is displayed for the selected period of the chart. Multiply it by the “Overage Charge” to get the final cost of traffic for the selected period.

In the chart:

  • The dotted line is “Dedicated Threshold”.

  • The pink areas of the columns indicate that the threshold has been exceeded.

  • Different shades of columns indicate which direction of traffic prevailed.

  • In the tooltip is the value of outgoing/incoming traffic for the given hour.

Hint

Speed less than 10 Mbps is not shown in the chart.

Access Speed Limitation

To avoid additional charges, you can limit the access speed of your servers in the “Network ” section on the page. Each of the items under “Network ” controls the total bandwidth for all resources that are associated with that network.

Typically, the item tagged “Cloud ‘ controls the bandwidth of all virtual servers in the selected region, and the item tagged “Infrastructure” controls the bandwidth of all hardware servers in the region.

TCP and UDP port restrictions

The service does not restrict in any way access to TCP or UDP ports of your server or ICMP messages and does not filter outgoing traffic. Since any service is accessible from the outside, we recommend that you take care of security yourself. Use a firewall to close the main ports, and limit the list of IP addresses that can access your servers via SSH or RDP.
